A1.1 How people respond to their environment, and what follows
How people respond to what the land offers — from dams, dikes, and irrigation that reshape where water goes, to terraced farming on steep slopes, resource towns near rich ore, and parks that protect wild places. Every response solves one problem and creates others, so geographers weigh short-term gains against long-term effects on people and the environment.

Explain the response and its long-term effect: the Netherlands' dikes.
- Netherlands: much of the country's land lies at or below sea level, so dikes and pumps hold the sea back — and the pumping never stops.

Explain the response and its long-term effect: Sudbury's nickel mines and a desert city's canals.
- Sudbury: specialized development grew near a rich mineral deposit, so the town's fortunes rise and fall with nickel.

A1.2 Different groups, different views
A proposal to flood a valley for a reservoir looks different to a developer, a farmer, a resort owner and an Indigenous nation whose traditional territory includes that valley. Each group weighs what it stands to gain and lose — and the same forest can be a living system to sustain across generations or mainly a stock to extract efficiently.

- Developer: the project turns unused land into needed homes and jobs. Farmer: whether chemical fertilizers and pesticides belong in the fields.
A1.3 Ranking environments by challenge and opportunity
Example
Rank a river floodplain, a hot desert and a polar region for human activity, and name the measure you used.
- A useful measure: how often natural hazards force residents to change their daily plans.
- Floodplain: floods deposit fertile soil, but the same floods can destroy homes — high opportunity, real challenge.

- Desert and polar: very little liquid fresh water is easily available year-round, so the challenge outweighs the opportunity for most activities.
A1.4 Same environment, different responses
Example
Compare the sustainability of dikes and Mekong stilt houses.
- Dikes and stilts: both are ways of living with large amounts of water on low-lying land — one holds it back, one rises above it.

- Las Vegas and the Gobi: one lifestyle adapts to wherever water exists and stays within those limits; the fixed city relies on outside supplies that may shrink.
