A1.1 Strategies, feelings and reasons
Grade 3 math asks you to hold several steps in mind. When a problem feels big, break it into smaller parts and do one at a time. Frustration is a signal to slow down, not to stop.
Example
Solve: A box holds 6 rows of 4 crayons. 5 crayons are missing. How many are there?
- Part 1: the full box. 6 × 4 = 24.
- Part 2: take away the missing ones. 24 − 5 = 19.
- Reason it: "I found the full box first, then removed the missing ones."
- Check: 19 + 5 = 24. ✓
Remember: Explaining why your way works is part of the math. So is listening to a way you didn't think of.
