A1.1 Plans, tools and persistence
Grade 4 problems often need a plan before a calculation: what is asked, what is known, which operation, which tool. When you feel stuck, that is the moment to slow down and choose, not to give up.
Example
Solve: 4 boxes hold 6 markers each. 9 markers are given away. How many are left?
- Asked: markers left. Known: 4 boxes of 6, 9 given away.
- Plan: multiply, then subtract. 4 × 6 = 24; 24 − 9 = 15.
- Check with a different tool: draw 4 groups of 6, cross out 9, count 15.
Tip: Say why: "I found the total first because the boxes are full."
Remember: A wrong first try is information, not failure. Change the plan, keep the goal.
