A1.1 Perseverance, reasoning and self-checking
In Grade 5, problems have more moving parts: decimals, fractions, several steps. The habits that carry you: estimate before you compute, check with a second method, and say your reasoning so someone else could follow it.
Example
Solve: A class of 24 splits into teams of 4. Each team needs 3 balls. Balls come in packs of 5. How many packs?
- Estimate: about 6 teams × 3 = 18 balls, so about 4 packs.
- Compute: 24 ÷ 4 = 6 teams; 6 × 3 = 18 balls; 18 ÷ 5 = 3 R 3 → 4 packs.
- Check: 4 packs = 20 balls ≥ 18. ✓
Tip: Reasoning: you cannot buy part of a pack, so round up.
Remember: When two methods disagree, that is a gift — one of them has a mistake you can now find.
