Example
Name the living and non-living things in the tree scene, and how they connect.
- Living: the tree, the bird, the eggs. Non-living: air, sunlight, soil, rain.
- The tree needs soil, rain and sun; the bird needs the tree for a nest and its insects for food.
- Take away the rain, and the tree, the insects and the bird all change.
B2.2 Basic needs
Every living thing needs air, water, food, heat, shelter and space. A plant's food comes from sunlight; an animal's from plants or other animals. Shelter can be a nest, a burrow, a shell, or a house.
Example
List how a pet rabbit gets each of its six needs.
- Air: the room. Water: a bottle. Food: hay and greens.
- Heat: fur and a warm house. Shelter: a hutch. Space: room to hop.
- Miss one need, and the rabbit cannot stay healthy.
B2.3 Body parts that meet needs
Example
Match each part to the need it meets: a duck's webbed feet, a cactus's thick stem, a rabbit's long ears.
- Webbed feet push water: the duck swims to find food.
- A thick stem stores water: the cactus survives where rain is rare.
- Long ears hear far: the rabbit hears danger and stays safe.
B2.4 Parts of the human body
Example
Point to each part and say its job: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, heart, lungs.
- Eyes see; ears hear; nose smells; tongue tastes; skin feels — the five senses.
- Heart, in the chest, pumps blood. Lungs, beside it, take in air.
- Bones hold you up; muscles move you; the stomach breaks down food.
B2.5 A healthy environment
Example
Describe a healthy pond, then a pond that is not, and what living things can do in each.
- Healthy: clear water, plants, fish — animals can drink, eat and breathe.
- Not healthy: litter, green film, no fish — the water cannot meet their needs.
- Clean air, clean water and nutritious food let living things get what they need.
B2.6 Living things provide for each other
Example
Say what each one provides: a bee at a flower, a tree for a squirrel, a cow for a farmer.
- The flower gives the bee nectar; the bee carries pollen so the flower makes seeds.
- The tree gives the squirrel nuts and a home.
- The cow gives milk; the farmer gives food and shelter. Living things trade needs.
