Example
Name the science each worker uses and the problem it solves: a crane operator, an optometrist.
- Crane operator: pulleys share the load, so a gentle pull lifts loads far beyond any team's strength.
- Optometrist: lenses refract light onto the right spot at the back of the eye, so a blurry world becomes sharp.

Name the science a stonemason uses and the problem it solves.
- Stonemason: knows which rocks split cleanly and which resist weather, so a wall stands for a century.
A3.2 Science with other subjects
Example
Plan a quiet reading corner for the library using science, math, art and language.
- Science: soft materials absorb sound; a lamp with an LED gives light and little heat.
- Math: measure the corner; compare sound-meter readings before and after.
- Art: design the panels. Language: write the sign explaining why it is quiet.
A3.3 Contributions from many communities
Science and technology have grown from many communities over thousands of years. In this part of the world, people built fish weirs to guide fish into traps, planted corn, beans and squash together — the Three Sisters — and made birchbark canoes light enough to carry between rivers. In cold regions, people built snow shelters whose packed walls trap warm air.
Example
Explain the science in a snow shelter and in a fish weir.
- Snow shelter: packed snow holds pockets of air, and air is a poor carrier of heat, so body warmth stays inside.
- Fish weir: a fence of stakes across a stream lets water through and guides fish into a narrow trap.
Remember: Each was observed, tested and improved over generations, then passed on.
