A1.1 Research
A research conclusion is only as strong as its records. Prefer sources that publish their data; record numbers, dates and methods, not impressions; and state a conclusion the evidence supports — never one that says *always*, *only*, or dismisses a result that did not fit.
Example
Find out: How has the water table under our town changed over twenty years, and why?
- Sources: the municipality's well-monitoring reports; a provincial groundwater map.
- Record each year's level with its source; note the years the reports skip.
- Conclude what the data supports — a fall through the dry years, partial recovery after — and name what it cannot settle.
A1.2 Experimentation
Example
Test: Does a cold egg float in salt water as readily as a room-temperature one?
- Hold: the same glass, the same amount of salt, the same volume of water, the same egg size. Change: egg temperature only.
- Record whether it floats, and how high; repeat three times with fresh water each time.
Example
Name the supported conclusion for the egg test.
- A supported conclusion names both eggs' results; it does not claim cold eggs always sink.
A1.3 Engineering design
Example
Design a pulley rig to lift a bucket with the least pull.
- Criteria: least pull on a spring scale. Constraints: two pulleys, cord, a beam.
- Test three lifts; record the pull; note where the cord slipped.
Example
Explain the design move when the rope slips.
- Change that part alone, repeat the identical trial, and the second run reports whether the change was the right one.
A1.4 Safety
Example
Match each hazard to the gear.
- Splashing liquids: goggles. Corrosive: gloves, and not one drop on skin. Spills that stain: an apron. Dropped masses: boots.
Example
Match each symbol to the habit, and name the first move after an accident.
- Flame: kept well clear of flames, sparks and heaters. Irritant: hands washed the minute the work is done. Environmental: only ever into the marked container, never a drain.
- Accident: everyone steps clear and an adult is told at once.
A1.5 Communicating findings
Example
Share the egg test with the class and with a water-quality technician.
- Class: a bar chart — title, both axes labelled with units, even steps, a scale from zero, a key.
- Technician: one line with the result and the method, so it can be repeated.
- Both: the result that did not fit, and what you would test next.
